The Solana Beach Civic and Historical Society

The society was founded over seventy years ago by a group of determined women called the Solana Beach Women’s Civic Club. Their goals included beautifying Highway 101, advocating for beach safety, and establishing a blood bank. Over the years, the society has continuously adapted its mission to serve the changing needs of the community.

In the 1950s, the society successfully removed billboards along Highway 101, thanks to the leadership of Wenetta Childs and collaboration with various partners. This accomplishment set the foundation for the society’s commitment to civic progress and historic preservation.

The Role of Solana Beach Museum

The Solana Beach Heritage Museum is housed in the restored Stevens House, an 1890s-era home relocated to La Colonia Park. It showcases the city’s diverse history, from Indigenous peoples and Spanish explorers to American settlers. The museum not only exhibits but also educates through interactive displays, living history programs, and community events. 

Visitors can learn about the local Kumeyaay tribe, who inhabited the area for thousands of years before Spanish colonization. They can also explore the significance of the San Elijo Lagoon and its ecosystem to Solana Beach’s development.

The society and museum play a crucial role in preserving Solana Beach’s heritage by collecting, documenting, and interpreting artifacts, photographs, and oral histories. They also collaborate with local organizations and schools to promote historical awareness and education.

The museum is open to the public on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of every month, with additional appointments available upon request.
