Vision for La Colonia Park

The city of Solana Beach is taking significant steps to enhance La Colonia Park, aiming to make it an even more welcoming and versatile space for the community. Updating the park’s master plan is underway, focusing on expanding the park onto a recently acquired piece of land along Stevens Avenue.

History of La Colonia Park

La Colonia Park has evolved since its original master plan was created in 2008. This plan led to developing the Veterans Courtyard at the community center in 2014 and the popular skate park in 2019. Currently, a new playground is under construction at the park’s south end, with completion expected in May.

New Developments on the Horizon

In 2022, Solana Beach purchased an adjacent vacant lot just north of the skatepark and basketball courts. With the help of Van Dyke Landscape Architects (VDLA), city leaders are now working on an updated master plan to incorporate this new space. After gathering community feedback over the past year, VDLA presented several exciting ideas for new park elements.

Key Proposals for the Park

One proposed addition is a new building for the Boys and Girls Club of San Dieguito, which operates out of a trailer on park property. This building would provide a safer and more secure environment for children, aligning with national standards for Boys and Girls Clubs.

Design Possibilities

VDLA presented three potential designs for the expanded park. One option includes a second community building on the new lot, additional parking, a new pickleball court, and more lawn or garden space.

Another idea is relocating the Heritage Museum, a historical 1890s-era home, to create more picnic areas and open spaces. Councilmember Dave Zito raised concerns about moving the fragile museum structure, but City Engineer Mo Sammak assured that expert companies could handle the move safely.

Funding and Future Steps

Council members discussed funding challenges for the new improvements, particularly the new building. Mayor Lesa Heebner mentioned balancing new projects with existing capital improvement needs. She also noted that the existing community center requires updates to better integrate with the rest of the park.

Armijo pointed out that the new lot has some grading issues, but a multi-story building could address these challenges. Another proposal included a parking garage, and Councilmember Jewel Edson suggested exploring the possibility of incorporating deed-restricted housing units for employees, though this might be cost-prohibitive.

Moving Forward

VDLA will continue to refine design options with an architect, aiming to create a comprehensive and feasible master plan for La Colonia Park. Once a final design is chosen, the city will adopt the updated La Colonia Park Master Plan, marking a significant milestone in enhancing this beloved community space.

With thoughtful planning and community input, the park will provide new facilities and recreational opportunities and strengthen the sense of community in Solana Beach. Stay tuned as this project progresses, and get ready to enjoy an even better La Colonia Park in the future!
