San Dieguito County Park

San Dieguito County Park sits just inland from town on Lomas Santa Fe Drive, right on the line between Del Mar and Solana Beach — this is a San Diego County park, not a city one, and it's the largest patch of open space in the area by a wide margin. The county acquired the land in 1954; sources disagree on exactly how much — San Diego County Parks' own listing and Wikipedia both give 125 acres, while Solana Beach's own city site describes the 1954 acquisition as roughly 100 acres. Both figures are cited here rather than picking one.

The park opened in two phases — an upper section in 1965, a lower one in 1977 — and today has over five miles of hiking trails, including Activity Hill, with ten fitness stations, three hillside ladders, lookout platforms, and two suspension bridges. Lower down, it's built for organized recreation: a baseball field used by the Miracle League of San Diego (adaptive baseball for kids with disabilities), a basketball court, five playgrounds for different age groups, an inclusive play space with ramps and specialty equipment, a volleyball court, a butterfly park, and two duck ponds.

It's also a genuine event venue — a wedding gazebo, reservable picnic pavilions with BBQs, and a nature-themed scavenger-hunt trail for kids round it out. Before Euro-American settlement the land was part of a Mexican land grant to Juan María Osuna; a Santa Fe Railway subsidiary later planted much of it in eucalyptus before the county bought it.
